This was a traditional ranch style house situated on a remarkable 3-acre site. When it was built, the house was sited with the all-too-prominent garage doors welcoming one’s arrival, and no connection between the interior spaces and the generously landscaped grounds. Our solution was to reorient the house by creating a new deck which runs the entire length of the residence and is angled out, on axis, with the lawn and gardens. The arrival experience is transformed by a tall skylit roof over a welcoming stairway and porch. Beyond the Entry porch, the deck, also accessible from the Family room, fans out to encompass a mature redwood tree, ample seating areas and an outdoor kitchen, all overlooking the sweeping lawn and gardens.
