The project presented the designers
with the problem of building on a steep slope while complying
with the state handicapped accessibility regulations. Since
the program required a single story building it was decided
to nestle it into the hillside with the extensive use of terracing.
The floor plan was laid out to facilitate the caregivers'
supervision of the children in all their activities. As a
home away from home for small children, it was important that
the building have a residential scale and a playful and whimsical
character. Both the interior and exterior spaces were carefully
crafted to stimulate creative exercise and imaginative play.
